It's Been Awhile

So it's been 5 months and 17 days since I've updated this blog, to say it's been neglected is a bit of an understatement. I've been really busy with school this semester and I haven't found the time/energy to update with some of the work I've been doing but I'll try to post it all sometime during the break. In the meantime I'll post the link to our final design assignment where we worked in groups of 3 to invent an idea for a TV show and to create a model pack for the show. I was in a group with my friends Mike and Gemma and we had some bumps along the way but I really believe that I couldn't have been in a better group! Thanks guys! We originally all had certain tasks we were supposed to perform, but we all ended up doing some work in all areas. I was sort of in charge of the design and look, but like I said, we all helped out. Model Pack

Overall I've learned so much this semester! I'm having so much fun and I'm so thankful I'm at Capilano, I'm really building a great foundation to build on....but holy crap my class is talented D:! I have a bad case of little fish, big pond. I guess the biggest thing I learned this semester is that I tend to prefer my design assignments over my animation ones. Also, for design next semester our teacher is Kenny Park so I'm really really stoked because his work is AMAZING!

Here's my final high school art project...

Haha I know it's weird but I wanted to try something different for my last project and I'm happy I did because I had a lot of fun making it. I think it's a pretty funny painting and I like how it turned out :).

On another note I've been really absorbed in the World Cup...I'm definitely proud of my Dutch citizenship at the moment:P.

I went drawing at the airport this week so I'll post the caricatures I did soon, I'm just too lazy to scan them today.

Belated News: I got into Capilano:D! I can't wait for September! Haha I should've posted this earlier but I've been busy with Grad and stuff and when I'm not busy I'm being lazy.

No art today, I'll post some soon hopefully. I'm almost done my final art project for Grade 12 so I'll post that when I'm done. All I can say about it is it's...interesting. Haha you'll know what I mean soon enough :P.

Pixar Canada opened today! And I also read today that Sony Animation and ILM are planning on opening studios in Vancouver too!!!

Here's a really awesome video they made for the opening. Hearing John Lasseter talk about where I live is just like when you're at a concert and the band talks about the city they're in and everyone's goes nuts:

Hey so I just watching Spongebob and I saw an ad that Monopoly's making a new Canadian version of Monopoly that uses a Canadian city instead of Atlantic City. But they're doing an online vote to choose which city they're gonna use! A Lesson on Character Studies

NPD Portfolio Art Dump

This is the portfolio I brought to NPD to show to the CalArts representative. It's been about 2 weeks since I went to NPD but I've just been too busy, and lazy when I'm not busy, to post this whole thing. It was at Emily Carr where I had to wait 4 hours in line to see CalArts. There was only one rep there, and Samantha and I were the last people in to see him:D! Let's just hope that luck can carry over to my actual portfolio I send into CalArts in 3 days! I'll try commenting on what the rep said about whichever pieces I remember. I went kind of overboard and brough 70 drawings, but I figured there was no harm in bringing a bunch for the review. I don't like some of these very much but I decided to bring to NPD them anyways to have the widest variety I could show to see what THEY liked most. These are in reverse order, so scroll down to the bottom to see it in the order they were in when I showed them. I'm gonna cut this waaaaay down for my final portfolio (probably around 20 drawings).

Overall the CalArts rep seemed really positive about my stuff and he said I had a very competitive portfolio:D! It was a bit of a confidence booster, but at the same time I didn't know how strongly to take his opinion because he was the theatre school admissions advisor. He told me to just keep drawing though because I may come up with some really great stuff in the last month. So that's what I've been doing.

I had a terrible day today:(. I got up for school and was exhausted because I couldn't sleep last night. I got to school and slept during English class and then my French teacher was being a...meanie(trying to keep it clean:) ) like she usually is because she hates me since I always speak English in her class. That afternoon my friend and I started working on our art project of painting our history teacher's door. I was being a clutz and splattered black paint all over my favourite yellow sweatshirt:(. It's ruined now. Last block I had Physics class and the quiz was kind of hard but I worked my ass off on it because I was determined to do well (I got my first B of the year in Physics on the last quiz so I was mad>:( ). Anyways that's nothing compared to the news I got when I got home:(.

Lately my cat, Luke Skywalker :P, has been sneezing. So on Saturday my mom and I took him to the vet to get him checked out. The vet took a blood sample, gave him a shot and prescribed him some antibiotics to get rid of his cold. He told us he'd do some blood tests and he'd have the results in a couple days. So today when I got home my mom said she got the results back. She told me my cat has feline leukemia:(. Apparently it's like AIDS for cats, so his immune system is shot for the rest of his life basically. That means that if he gets sick at all, and we don't catch it right away, he could die:(. So now Luke's not aloud outside anymore so that he doesn't infect other cats and so he doesn't catch any illnesses. I feel bad for him because he loves being outside and he's been an outdoors cat for his whole life (he's 11). I was really upset after hearing this because although I know he's not in any immediate danger, he's one step closer to the thing I've feared for so long. :(

I don't know why I wrote this but I wanted to rant.

CAT MASSAGE!

I found this video awhile back and I've showed it to alot of people because it's so funny it makes me cry:P. It's the best video on the internet. Even if there is a funnier video, this still remains the best tutorial on how to properly massage your cat :). So I'm posting it to spread the joy farther! 2 posts in one day!

Drawings From Last Week

Here are some of my favourite drawings from the last week. I went drawing 4 times. The Sunday session was with 2 female models dressed up in ringette gear. I didn't get any drawings I liked that day though because it was hard to draw the models fully clothed and on top of that I'd only had 3 hours of sleep the night before. I went see a triple feature on Saturday night with some friends. The 3 movies were Law Abiding Citizen (it's crap and avoid it if you can), Inglorious Basterds (I loved this one! Who doesn't like to see Nazis getting killed!? I think it's Tarantino's best movie after Pulp Fiction), and Zombieland (which was pretty great too). The best part was it was only $10:)...but I was hopeless the next day for drawing since the movies didn't end until 7AM. Anyways here are the drawings I mentioned earlier. A couple are portfolio contenders at the moment but I won't say which because I'd like to know what everyone else thinks without my input clouding their judgement:).

It was my first time life drawing with a wet medium and it was alot of fun! I'm planning on using some watercolours when I go again on Thursday as long as I don't have too much homework:(.

My Very Belated Post on My Trip to Los Angeles

My mom, my sister, and I took a short trip down to LA at the beginning of September to go to Disneyland, D23 Expo, and CalArts. Unfortunately, my brother didn't come though because he's so busy at UBC :(. I'll start at the beginning though.

We arrived at the airport a little bit early so we decided to get something to eat. Since it was breakfast, we got doughnuts and Iced Capps at Tim Horton's (this is off topic but I saw an ad the other day for Timbit ripoffs and I got mad!). We were eating breakfast, and my sister started getting paranoid that we would miss the flight, so we started walking towards the security check and the security guard told us to chug our iced capps or throw them out:(. I chugged it and got brain freeze. We went through the doors, and there were customs officers EVERYWHERE! We hadn't noticed it was September 11th haha.

After we landed and got the rental car, we had to drive to my mom's friend's, from high school, house, where we were staying, in Pasadena. LA freeways are freaky(punny)...so many lanes -: ! We arrived at her house in the evening to meet her, after searching for an hour for the right street, and then we went out. She works at Disney(not animation) so she gave us a tour. After that she drove us by the Disney Studios, so I could see it in person:D!

The next day we went to Disneyland! So we found our parking spot, and I started rolling up the window...cept the window didn't roll up! Instead it came off the track and started jutting inside the car right where I was sitting. So we had to leave the car window open. That's why you get rental insurance kids! Luckily we did so we had to drive from Disneyland to the car rental place(near LAX) and back to Pasadena through a city we didn't know after leaving Disneyland at midnight! :D

I'd been to Disneyland when I was 8 but it was my first time at California Adventure, but it was kinda crappy. Here are some pictures.

On my second ride of Pirates of the Caribbean, I noticed this painting of a pirate that looked oddly familiar...

Then it struck me!

DAVID BOWIE'S HIDING IN DISNEYLAND AS A CROSS DRESSING PIRATE!!!...or as she is currently known, Mademoiselle Greenwell.

We went to the D23 Expo the next day and I saw John Lasseter in real life :D! They showed 2 clips from PatF, the Toy Story 3 trailer that was just released to the public about a week ago, a featurette on Winnie the Pooh, and production artwork and animation tests from Rapunzel, among other things. We weren't aloud to have cameras during John Lasseter's speech so I have no photos of it:(. Here are some pictures of the show floor though.

These were made entirely out of LEGO!!! I miss playing with LEGO:(

We could've stayed to watch Toy Story 1 & 2 in 3D but we we'd overdosed on Disney at that point (my mom at sister at least), so we decided to drive down Sunset Blvd to Santa Monica.

The next day...I VISITED CALARTS!!

It's really awesome there! I know the people who critiqued my portfolio and showed me around won't be reading this but I just want to send out a huge thank you to all of them! They helped me get back on track after I had derailed. I believe I posted before about what they said about my portfolio so I won't repeat myself. The campus was beautiful but much smaller than I thought...which is good! I can only suggest that you visit the campus for yourself if you're seriously looking into it because it's not what you expect! It's different in certain ways, not at all bad! In fact it's better than I thought it would be! It's just that what you expect to be the things that make the school great, aren't what make it great. I think the best thing about it is that it has this energy about it and the people (even when the walls and cubes were practically empty) that I've never experienced at any other school before! I'll stop being all deep and meaningful though by showing more pictures! WOOT!

Life Drawings (October 21, 2009)

Here are some drawings I did yesterday. I went to a session at the SFU Surrey campus which is only 1 bus and 2 Skytrain stops from my house! Normally to get to Capilano University sessions are 1 bus, 8 skytrain stops, and another bus away, so this is much better for me! PLUS, the session was only $2!!! The model wasn't the greatest though because she wouldn't stop moving her head to look around and moving her arms to scratch her faces etc. D:<

3-This is a perfect example of WHY I can't draw poses for longer than 7(ish) minutes! I finished my drawing early but it looked very ordinary...so I decided to make it distinct. And how did I decide to do this!? BY MAKING HER CRY BLOOD OF COURSE!!! Why am I such an idiot:(...?
4-I was trying to stretch the torso and make the head squished into the chest but I failed and it looks like a mistake. The colour isn't finished either. I posted it because despite those things, I kind of like it.

6Now that I've posted these though, I've noticed so many more problems.

Here's my final art project from Grade 10. I thought I'd post it because I'm proud of it...unlike these life drawings. I put probably at least 100 hours of work into it. The assignment was to paint a collage of your idol in monochromatic blue on a (approximately) 36"X24" board. I'm doing another one this year of Conan O'Brien I think.

So I heard on Conan the other night that it's raining in LA :O! That's good news for me because one of my biggest fears of moving down there, if I got accepted into CalArts, was that there would be no rain! Coming from a city where rain is as common as a cat with fur, this is very reassuring:).

Here are some new drawings I did on Sunday and Monday. I've drawn these two models alot because they're often at the sessions i go to, luckily they're good models. I have some problems still with proportions and anatomy (especially connecting the head to the body and the face) but I think I'm improving. I'm still just focusing on improving my drawing skills though instead of that experimental stuff i was doing before. Let me know what you think:).

So I went to visit CalArts last weekend and I was told that my portfolio was headed in the wrong direction and that I needed to change course, and really focus on my drawing skills. I'll make a post later tonight, or tomorrow, about my trip to Los Angeles. It's taken me awhile to make a post about my trip because of school and stuff lol. For the mean time here are some structures gestures I've been doing every day for an hour or two off of youtube videos, of dancers, figure skaters, gymnasts and MMA fighters, because I haven't had the chance to go to a drawing session since I've come back home. The photos are really bad because the flash was blinding out the lines of the drawings so I had to use no flash which made them a little blurry and gave them a yellow discolouration. By the way, the first, 3rd and 4th pictures are sideways and I can't seem to fix them, sorry:(. Just tilt your head.

Life Drawings (September 3, 2009)

So yesterday at the drawing session I started off badly but I was warmed up pretty quickly. The session started with gestures, then we moved into 10 minute poses and finally 3 half hour poses. so on the first half hour pose I had started off with getting the gesture down with a yellow china marker (my favourite medium for life drawing) on a fluorescent green piece of paper. It was starting to look really awesome I thought and I was like wow this is starting to be the best drawing ive ever done. Then I realized how hard the light yellow was to see on the neon green, so I decided to go over it in red china marker so that it will stand out more. Typical of me, I had ruined the drawing because the traced red looked dead and lifeless D:< !!!! I always make decisions that I know deep down will look like crap but for some reason I do it anyways cuz im an idiot. I was really ticked off for the rest of the session because of what I had done lol. Then on the last drawing, I started drawing on a green piece of paper with (once again) YELLOW! turns out, its hard to see (who would think:O)! So what did I learn? I learned that I do not learn from my mistakes.

So this was my last week in the Capilano Summer Animation Program (tomorrow's my final day) and I had a blast! The program was way more intense than I thought it would be which I liked alot but took a massive toll on my social life for the summer lol. If anyone is reading this and is looking for a summer animation program, check this one out because it was awesome! I've learned so much these last to months that I can't imagine how much I'd learn if I went to school for 4 years, at calarts hopefully:D!!! Anyways here are my final animation projects. I kind of had to rush on one of them to get something to show my teacher, but he wasnt marking them hard anyways, so it's missing some inbetweens and only the major keyframes have been tied down. This was my final animation for my hand-drawn animation class and it doesn't look the greatest because some idiot turned night mode on on the pencil test camera and i didn't notice till i was halfway done filming and compositing the curtain overtop of the guy so I was too lazy to reshoot it. So there's alot of detail in the face that's hard to see :(.

This is the assignment I had to rush through. It was for flash class and we were aloud to animate whatever we wanted. I hate animating in flash using the cutout technique so I just hand drew it on the Cintiq in TV Paint. I think it will be alot better if i finish it .

Here are some of my drawings I did today at Basic Inquiry. I was trying out different things and some turned out well, others didn't but I got a couple I like quite a bit. I also did some more traditional 5 minute drawings just so I can improve on that still. I really hated how this model did all sitting or lying down poses, it was so annoying because standing poses can be so much more dynamic!

Dialogue Animation

This is my last assignment for animation class. I'm half done but I thought I'd post what I've finished so far.

This assignment's been really hard because it's been difficult to keep the size of the fish consistent

since the basic shape of a fish is an oblong oval. When foreshortening and distortion happens, it

makes it really hard to resort back to the original shape. Surprisingly I find it easier to animate

people because when foreshortening and distortion happens on some of the limbs or body parts,

you can always use the rest of the body as reference for the proportions. I also didn't draw the

dorsal fins and such or Nemo's stripes because they're a pain in the ass to keep consistent aswell.

Now I know why this movie was animated in CG lol. Let me know what you think about it though.

My First Animations

Here are some animation assignments I did at Capilano Animation throughout July. I just finished up a walk and run animation a couple days ago which I'll post tomorrow probably and I'm going to be finishing up my first dialogue assignment (which is animated to an audio clip everybody probably knows...but I'm not gonna say because it's a surprise) tomorrow which I'll also be posting soon, if all goes well 8-| ). I also have an older assignment that needs some fixing before I want to post it. This is my first time doing real animations since I've only done flipbooks with stickmen during 6th grade and a terrible flash cartoon I made in 9th grade.

In case you're interested (or if anyone's even reading this), here's the piece of crap flash I made in 9th grade...don't judge me based on this lol.

I'm pretty happy with my animations so far and so is my teacher apparently, I've gotten 100% on almost

my assignments except 1 or maybe 2 that i got 98% (I also have the highest mark in my class out of

26 students:D!). I don't think these are really portfolio demo reel quality but I don't really know so let me

know if you think I should include these in a demo reel when I apply to Calarts.

New Life Drawings

So I've been taking a summer animation program at Capilano University to prepare for the portfolio I'll be sending to Calarts and some other animation schools. I was planning on posting every once in awhile during the course but that hasn't really been happening (as you can see:) ). Anyways I'm gonna do a big huge update right now with some life drawings I've done and some animations, but I'll separate them up into different posts, why, because I feel like it dammit >:| !!!!

Anyways here are some of the drawings I've done throughout July. I kind of like some of them, but I'm really scared that my portfolio won't be ready by December because I hate most of the drawings I've been doing. The class has been kind of traditional in the teaching approach to animation so I've been trying to experiment more ( aka disobeying the teacher) but I don't think I really have the hang of it yet:(. These are mostly just gestures since we don't get very much time to do longer poses, which pisses me off kinda. There's also a still life drawing in there. Here we go...

COLDPLAY!!!!!

Coldplay at Coal Harbour(I believe) :O !

So I haven't posted in awhile so I thought it was about time that I fix that, even if this topic is not at all related to animation. On Sunday night I went to the Coldplay concert at GM Place in Vancouver and it was absolutely amazing!!! I was already a big Coldplay fan but they are 10 times better live than on a recording, and that's saying something! Snow Patrol opened the show along with an Australian band called Howling Bells. Coldplay opened with Life in Technicolor(i not ii) followed by Violet Hill and I lost track of the order of songs after that(I think Yellow was next). For Yellow they released dozens of huge yellow balloons down onto the crowd that were bouncing around everywhere. I was kinda bummed that they didn't play Don't Panic, which is one of my favourites, but it was still a spectacular show! To top it all off they filmed the Vancouver show for a live DVD release :D :D!!! I ruined my voice at the concert so bad that it hurt to drink liquids but it was all worth it:).

I'm starting a 2 month animation program at Capilano University on July 6 and it's 5 days/wk

6 hours/day so I'll be very busy and I'll be trying to post most of what I do.

I doubt anyone even reads this, what a waste of time lol.

Up was awesome! It's the funniest Pixar movie ever, but it's also the most dramatic and serious which is an odd combination but I think that's one of the strongest aspects of the movie. It's a perfect example of what Walt Disney once said, "For every laugh there should be a tear." I don't think it's the best movie pixar has made but it's definitely in the top 3 with the incredibles and wall-e. I've seen it twice now and I really wanna go back and see it a third time, but i have no money:( I'll finish this post with a secret frame of the movie that was never released to the public:O!!...

So I started up this blog about a month ago and to post my artwork on but i didn't post any cuz after setting everything up...i got bored lol. But I've decided to put it to good use and start posting some artwork. I'm coming to the end of grade 11 so come december, I'll be applying to Character Animation at California Institute of the Arts. So I'll be using this blog to post my efforts at a portfolio as the deadline for admissions slowly creeps closer.

I'm starting an 8-week full time animation program at Capilano University in July for my summer so im really stoked for the end of school!!! I'll probably post my work from that program as I go as well. Anyways I should probably post some artwork lol. These drawings are all from a gesture drawing session i went to on sunday.
